the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, the narrator describes the romantic approach his
friend has toward life as he chooses
not to learn how to maintain his expensive new motorcycle but simply hopes
for the best. In contrast, the narrator has
a scientific approach to his older motorcycle. Through a rational approach of diagnosis and problem solving, he can repair
the mechanical failures of his older bike as
they travel on a 17-day road trip together.
For those of us who own older boats, romanticism will not get us very far up the
remote Inside Passage if we are unable to
attend to the inevitable mechanical glitches that can occur along the way.
I confess I am a romantic through and
through. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than being in the moment. When
the wind comes up, you get the sails set
and the wind pushes your vessel forward
with grace. These moments when you are
plunged into communion with the natural
world are the reason we boat.
These issues always seem to pop up at
the worst times, like in the remote anchorages of the Inside Passage. Here the experience is heightened. Clouds cascade
